We provide many dental treatments in our dental office. Root Canal Treatment is one of our dental treatment services. There are 5 questions you may want to know about this treatment.

  1. Why do I need a Root Canal Treatment?
  2. Root canal treatment is to save and repair your tooth that has a deep cavity, cracked tooth, broken tooth or infected tooth. Deep decay, broken tooth and cracked tooth will lead bacteria get into a tooth pulp and neve to cause inflammation and infection. During a root canal procedure, the infected never and pulp of the tooth will be removed, cleaned and sealed. Otherwise, the tooth has to be removed to get rid of infections.

The goals of root canal therapy are to:

    • Remove bacteria and infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals;
    • Completely fill the canal(s) and pulp chamber with a solid filling material to prevent future trouble.

When root canal treatment is done, inflammation in the bone around the root ends can heal, and the tooth is saved.

  3. How Root Canal Treatment is Done?
  4. Root Canal Treatment proceeds in two stages:

    a. Preparing the root canal(s); and

    b. Filling the canal(s)

Preparation:

Your family dentist at Credit Dental Centre in Mississauga gently makes an opening into the tooth. Local anesthesia is applied to prevent discomfort during this procedure. All tooth decay is removed during this step. Your dentist uses a series of very delicate, flexible finger-held and motorized instruments to remove the dead tissue debris and bacteria. This will also allow your dentist to shape the canal in preparation to receive the filling material.

Filling the Canals:

After preparation, all canals are filled with a biocompatible material and then filled with tooth filling materials. If not filled, tissue fluid from the bone could eventually seep into any unfiled areas of the canal to cause more inflammation. The most commonly used filling the canal material is a firm, waxy, rubbery compound.

Is Root Canal Treatment painful?

During root canal treatment, your dentist will apply local anesthesia to numb the area. Occasionally, your dentist will write a prescription for a stronger pain reliever if necessary but in most cases it is not required.

How many visits do I need for this treatment and how long does it take?

Root Canal Treatment at Credit River Centre in Mississauga usually takes one appointment for a duration of 1-2 hours depending on how many canals the tooth has. An additional appointment may be required if there is a complicated infection or more canals and curved roots.

Do I need a crown after this treatment?

The best option after root canal treatment for your tooth is to put a crown on it. Normally, dental crowns are required for molars and premolars. The crown can protect the tooth from any further damage. For instance, after root canal treatment, your dentist will put a large filling on your saved tooth, it can easily break or crack from night-time grinding. It may not be necessary depending on the location and susceptibility of the tooth. This will be determined at the time your treatment plan for this tooth is created.

Root canal treatment avoids the complication and greater expense of replacing teeth that would otherwise be lost. Examples of teeth replacement are implants and dentures.
