Providing dental implant treatment in Mississauga is just one of the services we have available for the replacement of missing teeth.  Dental implants are considered the “gold standard” for replacing missing teeth as implants do not affect adjacent teeth and help maintain the integrity of the bone. 1. So, what is a dental implant, how does it feel and what if I am missing more than one tooth?

A dental implant is small and screw-like. They are typically made from titanium and are placed where the original tooth root was in the jawbone. Once the surrounding bone has integrated with the screw an artificial tooth is placed on the top and will provide you with the same function as your natural tooth. A dental implant not only functions like a real tooth but it also feels and looks like a real tooth as well.

Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or a full arch. It will be determined at your consultation or at you first examination appointment what would be the best course of treatment. If you have one or more missing teeth or will have a tooth with poor prognosis removed an implant may be right for you. If you are not comfortable or satisfied with your full denture, partial denture, crown and bridge, dental implants may be a better option for you.

2. How long does it before I get my tooth placed on the implant?

Generally, if bone grafting is not necessary, an implant on lower teeth will take approximately 4 months to complete. For upper implants it takes about 6 months. However, if the bone grafting needs to be done before implant placement, it will take additional 4 months for lower teeth and 6 months for upper teeth. If bone grafting is required, you will be referred to a specialist for this.

3. How long does a dental implant last?

On average dental implants will last for 15-20 years. However, if they are maintained well and evaluated by your dentist or dental hygienist regularly, they can last a lifetime.

4. How many dental visits Do I need for dental implants at Credit River Dental?

Normally there will be 6 visits involved from your first consultation appointment with Dr. Lee at our Port Credit dental clinic in Mississauga. Your first appointment will be a short consultation. The second visit will be the dental implant placement. The third appointment is a short visit two weeks after the initial implant placement. At this visit Dr. Lee will remove suture and check the healing cap on the implant to see if it requires any tightening. The fourth appointment will occur one month from the last visit. At this time, a radiograph will be taken to check the bone level around the implant and if the bone has integrated to the implant. The fifth appointment will be performed after two-to-two half months from the fourth visit. At this time Dr. Lee will take impressions to prepare for placement creation of your implant crown. At the 4 month to 6 month mark or you will have your final appointment if the bone has integrated with the implant. At this appointment you will have your brand-new tooth.

5. Does the implant placement procedure cause any discomfort?

Because the dental implant is placed into your jawbone, you might think there will be a lot of discomfort during or after this surgery. At our Port Credit dental clinic in Mississauga, Dr. Lee will use local anesthetic to prevent the discomfort during the procedure. You will feel some pressure when the implant is placed but not discomfort. After the procedure Dr. Lee will prescribe some medication to help you reduce any discomfort you may experience once the dental anesthetic wears off. The majority of our patients who have had dental implants placed with us in Mississauga, say they didn’t need to use the pain-reducing medication. There may be a little soreness experienced.

6. What should I do after my dental implant(s) procedure?

On the first day of your dental implant placement try to avoid spitting and rinsing your mouth or smoking if you smoke. A soft diet is best for the first couple of days. On the second day you can rinse and brush very gently but avoid brushing the implant area. At 4 or 5 days you should rinse your mouth with warm salt water. For the next 3 days be very gentle when brushing. If you are a smoker try to avoid smoking during the healing process. However, if you want to keep your implant as long as possible, the best thing to do is quite smoking.

7. How to take care of my dental implants?

As mentioned before good maintenance will prolong the life of your dental implant . Good maintenance entails brushing and cleaning in between the teeth with floss or other dental adjuncts daily and at least twice daily as well as keeping the recommended hygiene visits with your dental office to ensure those areas you cannot clean are cleaned by your dental hygienist.
