With the holiday season just days away, you’re making your Christmas food list, gift lists, scheduling parties, travel and all sorts of exciting plans to ring in the new year. This often leads to forgetting about ourselves when it is so important that we don’t. There’s nothing like wonderful plans not being so wonderful if we aren’t at our best. We know that it gets busy so it may not be the most ideal time to schedule in your regular dental appointment so as your Mississauga dentist, we want to provide you with some tips and tricks to help maintain your most optimal smile during the holiday season. To keep your smile bright and healthy, follow these dental care tips:
Brush Properly and Regularly: Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, spending at least two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and angle it toward the gumline to remove plaque effectively. If possible, use an electric toothbrush since they are far more superior than a manual brush. If you don’t have one, perhaps you can add it to your wishlist this Christmas. Our favourite electric toothbrushes include the Oral B iO series. For the techy recipient, these make fantastic gifts! They allow you to pair to your phone and with the Oral B app, you can track your brushing and determine the best pressure to use to maximize plaque removal.
Don’t Forget to use an Interdental cleaner: Floss, soft picks, interproximal brushes, water flossers, wooden or plastic interdental sticks remove food particles and plaque that a toothbrush can’t reach. They prevent plaque buildup which leads to staining, bad breath and gum issues. Our favourite water flossers are the Water-Pik cordless waterproof flossers that you can use in the shower. For those who like their regular floss, one of our favourite is Coco floss which was created by a dentist. What we like is that it fluffs up in between your teeth for maximum plaque removal and it comes in a variety of fun flavours.
Limit Stain-Causing Foods and Drinks: Coffee, tea, red wine, and certain berries can stain teeth. If you enjoy these foods, rinse your mouth with water afterward, and consider using a straw for drinks to minimize contact with teeth.
Rinse with Mouthwash: Mouthwash not only freshens breath but also fights bacteria and protects against plaque. Look for a fluoride or whitening mouthwash to give an added boost to your dental hygiene routine. Our favourite mouthwash is Listerine because it contains essential oils such as eucalyptol, menthol and thymol.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria. It also helps prevent dry mouth, which can lead to bad breath and decay. Who doesn’t like a new water-bottle? Water-bottles are a great gift for the hard to buy person on your list. With the variety of Water-Bottles in the market there are some that are sure to impress and be useful this holiday season.
Eat Teeth-Friendly Foods: Crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and celery help scrub teeth naturally. Dairy products, nuts, and leafy greens provide calcium, which strengthens enamel.
Quit Smoking: Tobacco causes stubborn stains and increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer. Quitting smoking benefits your oral health and your overall health.
Consider Whitening Treatments: For extra brightness, use whitening toothpaste or consider professional whitening treatments. We can provide options suited to your needs and reduce the risk of tooth sensitivity. To learn more about whitening, click here.
Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly: Change your toothbrush every 3–4 months, or sooner if bristles are frayed. A worn-out toothbrush can’t clean teeth as effectively. Toothbrushes and replacement electric toothbrush heads make fantastic stocking stuffers this holiday season.
Following these tips can help keep your teeth bright and healthy, promoting a long-lasting smile not just during the holiday season but all year round!
If you decide to ring in 2025 with a new and improved smile, we can certainly help you with this. These are some dental services that can keep your smile mistletoe ready and give you the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted:
