Most retainers live about 18 months — if you’re gentle. But, over 85% of people (yes, most of us) unknowingly grind or clench their teeth, which can stretch out retainers prematurely. Early stretching is super common, especially with your first tray since it’s working overtime those first few months.
Pro tip: Not wearing your retainer daily (even once you “graduate” to nighttime-only) is another fast-track way to lose that flawless alignment.
Retainer #1 should only be used for one year because it was worn day and night for the first three months. The other retainers will last longer—up to 18 months—since they’re only worn at night.
Think of this like a “tire rotation” — but for your smile.
Every six months, pop in a fresh duplicate retainer.
If you’re running solo with only one set of retainers, you won’t realize your teeth have shifted until… well, until you notice it. And at that point, the shift is permanent without more orthodontic work (and we know you don’t want to go down that road again).
