Celebrate Your Smile This April!

April is Oral Health Month and an important part of this celebration is National Dental Hygiene Week, which takes place from April 6th to 13th. Here at Credit River Dental Centre, we recognize our hygienists as an integral part of our team, as they ensure our patients and their smiles are greatly taken are of! National Dental Hygiene Week also reminds us to focus on the importance of our oral health and emphasizes the goal of dental hygienists in terms of achieving “oral health for total health” for everyone.

The primary role of dental hygienists is oral disease prevention, in order to improve and maintain patients’ overall physical and mental well-being. As one of your primary health care providers, dental hygienists are valuable partners in terms of prevention and play an important role in everyone’s life. Our oral health is deeply connected to our general health, and the conditions within our mouths can signal more serious issues within our bodies. Dental hygienists can work collaboratively with you in order to develop oral self-care routines, and offer treatment recommendations and disease preventing strategies in order to benefit you and your oral health. Whether it be through introducing toddlers to their first dental visit or providing care to adults with periodontal disease, dental hygienists want to ensure that you have a healthy smile for life.

Oral Health Month and National Dental Hygienists Week gives everyone a perfect opportunity to create new oral health goals in order to improve one’s oral condition. The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association have formulated a chart with some oral health tips that can help to set you up for success and allow you to achieve your greatest smile! If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us and ask your dental hygienist about what she/he can do to help you improve your overall oral health!

Modern Business Profile – Mississauga’s Credit River Dental

In this installment of our Modern Business Profile series, we learn more about Credit River Dental and how they’ve set them apart from the competition along with how they’ve overcome challenges to become one of the top businesses in their competitive marketplace.

How long has Credit River Dental been in business for?

Since June 2009.

What's the most rewarding part of operating a small, local business?

It would have to be that you are creating something that you had envisioned.  Of course there are going to be growing pains but that is just one of the many accepted challenges that come with being your own boss.

What are some of the challenges you've faced?

Everyone comes from different backgrounds and different experiences and dental patients are no different. They have experiences at previous dental offices, good and bad. If they were bad, you have to be the one to convince them and eventually show them that things will be different. In a good way obviously. If their experiences were good then you have to make sure that you surpass their expectations.

How have you overcome them?

Be sincere and never ever disparage another dentists’ work because you just do not know the circumstance in which the work was done. Be as educated as you can possibly be and do not be afraid to refer out to a specialist what you do not feel comfortable treating. It’s better for the patient and your practice.  Always remember that because we are dealing with people and biology, perfection is never a realistic goal but always, always aim for excellence.

Describe your team in six words

Not just great staff, great people.

Why did you pick Mississauga to set up shop?

I grew up and went to school in Toronto and I worked for a number of years in Hamilton so the Golden Horseshoe has always been home for me. Family and friends have always been very important to me so I didn’t want to have to travel too far to be able to see them on a regular basis.

Mississauga is a great in between, Port Credit is a beautiful area and as luck would have it my wife and her family have lived here for most of their lives.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Have integrity and take great care of your clients.

What trends do you predict for your industry over the next few years?

As the population ages I think there are 2 main areas that will come to the forefront. Firstly I believe that patients will be made more aware of the connection between oral and systemic health especially as the population ages. Let’s take sleep apnea for example. Our office screens everyone for sleep apnea which in my mind is one of the most under diagnosed conditions in our society. The oral health care provider really is the first line of defense with sleep apnea since we routinely spend 30-60 minutes looking down your airway. The link between gum disease and a number of autoimmune conditions has been well documented for at least a decade now.

Secondly, everyone wants that fountain of youth as we get older and we have great options for providing that whether it be in the form of porcelain veneers or brightening up your smile with an in office whitening session. Maybe you want to straighten those crowded teeth you have been thinking about for many years but were just too busy focusing on raising your kids and your family and neglected taking care of yourself. We have many many adult orthodontic patients because it’s not just about esthetics anymore but also about hygiene and function.

In a crowded marketplace, how does Credit River Dental set itself apart?

Dentistry has evolved and is ever so changing.  It is important to recognize that keeping current and updated will allow you to give the best care possible to your patients. Our team at Credit River Dental Centre prides ourselves on our commitment to our valued patients which is driven by our passion about the field of dentistry.  It isn’t about just teeth anymore, it’s about providing custom comprehensive care.  From the moment you contact our office, our team will ensure we look after any concerns or questions you may have about your oral health.  From the moment you step into our office, you become part of our Credit River Dental Centre Family and our team ensures that we always give you a reason to smile!  We pride ourselves on our ability to work well together as a team and we love hearing patients tell us the office has a warm family environment.   Custom comprehensive care is what we’re all about because after all “No Two Smiles Are Alike!” and we invite you and your family to become part of the Credit River Dental Family.

Autumn and You and What to Do…

As your Port Credit Dentist, we aim to provide you with information that can have a positive impact on your overall health.  With seasons changing, saying goodbye to summer sometimes makes one a little sad with the pending arrival of the long winter months. But, there is still the beautiful autumn season that is now upon us. There are a lot of activities you can do to enjoy the outdoors before the brisk chill of winter comes.

As the weather cools down gradually it is much more comfortable for most people to do outdoor activities. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Planting fall flowers – flowers that can withstand the chill of fall without withering away (such as the chrysanthemum, oak leaf hydrangeas, heleniums to name a few). These flowers will still add some beautiful colour to your garden to last until the winter. Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start cleaning up the garden and putting away lawn furniture.
  • Farm visits are always a good idea especially when you’ve got children (but is not limited to only children), as they offer a wide variety of activities such as apple picking, pumpkin picking, wagon rides, corn mazes and many more.
  • Hiking, biking or simply just taking a drive through a scenic part of your area to look at the various colours of the leaves.
  • Go camping. Now that it is cooler there won’t be too much annoying insects and heat to deal with. Snuggling up with a blanket and hot chocolate by the bonfire will be just as awesome. This may be a more pleasant experience for some, so give it a try – even if only in your backyard! Just be sure to pack extra warm clothes and appropriate gear for the chilly night time.
  • Hot air balloon ride – If this is on your bucket list many suggest to do so during autumn due to the extraordinary colour display of the leaves. Going up 1,000 feet in the air really allows you to get a spectacular view!
  • Visit the Zoo – With school back in session, most attractions are less busy therefore making your experience more relaxing. Also, it is known that the animals are much more active when it is cooler. This can mean you may actually see them doing something other than sleeping when it is too hot.

There are also a few festivals/events that are happening around the GTA that usually have free admission. You can look online for events that are happening in your town/city for information.  We hope as you’re reading this, it inspires you to try something you’ve never done before or get you excited for another chance to experience these amazing things that autumn has to offer.  And don’t forget that at Credit River Dental Centre, in Mississauga, we’re all about optimum overall health, so as we prepare for the colder months ahead, make sure to take caution in dressing for the weather and keeping your oral health in check too!

Eat Right Challenge – 66 Days to Eat Clean so we can Stay Clean

Food is a very important part of our lives.  Like fuel for a car it helps us to function, getting us from point A to B and so much more.  To emphasize the importance of food, March has been recognized as National Nutrition Month. The Dieticians of Canada have focused their efforts on unlocking the potentials of food to fuel, discover, prevent, heal, and bring us together.  For more information on this click here!

To bring awareness to the importance of nutrition to overall health, we have begun the #EATRIGHTCHALLENGE at our office.  Follow us on Instagram by clicking here to see if we can make it.  We have challenged ourselves to make clean eating and healthy a habit and in doing so, we plan to create healthy meals for 66 days and post them everyday since it takes 66 days to make anything a habit.

It isn’t always easy to eat healthy especially with tight schedules and the busyness of today’s lifestyles.  Although we have just begun our challenge, we have already found ideas and tips that have helped us maintain our goal.  So what 5 things can we do to make it easier to eat clean and stay clean?

  1.  A well stocked fridge/freezer and pantry with healthy food options will make a huge difference.  How does this help? Well if it isn’t there, you aren’t going to be able to eat it. So if you’re craving something sweet, you won’t be able to eat cookies if they aren’t there.  You could have that wonderful fruit you purchased for your fruit basket instead.
  2. It is recommended that we eat 3 meals a day and snack 3 times a day.  That may seem overwhelming to prepare for and sometimes finding options for these that’ll keep things in balance are difficult.  This is where leftovers and keeping meals simple are important. Sure it’s nice to sit down to a meal so beautifully prepared which you’ve slaved over for an hour but realistically who has time to do this?  Mix and match for upcoming days with your leftovers and be your creative self. Turn that piece of chicken you had with sweet potatoes for dinner into a chicken salad for lunch the next day. Take those sweet potatoes and make them into a soup.  It’s all about simplicity and maximizing the use of what you have. As for snacks, a piece of fruit, nuts, yogurt, and cheese are great options. These don’t really require any prep and are easy to toss in a container and into your bag.
  3. Pick a few simple recipes that you know are winners and keep ingredients to these recipes always in stock.  This way when something unplanned pops up and you have to quickly make something to feed your family, you don’t succumb to the nearest McDonald’s drive thru.
  4. The food itself is important for eating clean but to stay clean, having options for food storage are just as important.  If you’re on the go like our family, packing food in appropriate container(s) for lunches and snacks will ensure that all food groups are met.  Containers are also important for storage in the fridge for leftovers and pre-washed fruit.  Using a vacuum packer is great when purchasing items to freeze in bulk or maintaining the freshness of refrigerated items.
  5. Know what you’ve got!  It’s important to know what you have available and also what you need to shop for.  Whether you keep a list in your pantry or you use a Boogie LED board to list the foods in your fridge, knowing your options will again help you figure out what you’re going to have for the day.  Grocery shopping has never been this easy. Using apps on your mobile phone are great for this especially when you can sync with a recipe you want to try out and also sync it with someone else who does the grocery shopping in your home.  If you have interactive smart home devices such as Google Home or Amazon’s Echo, all you need to do is link your mobile phone’s shopping list app to these interactive smart home devices and verbally dictate to them items you need to shop for.

To do our part in helping you eat clean and stay clean, the dental hygiene team at Credit River Dental Centre will be providing a complimentary nutritional assessment to those of our patients who are interested in knowing if they are making the good food choices.  Our job is not only to keep your teeth sparkling clean but also to help you reach that goal of optimal overall health. Call us today at (905) 278-4297 or email us at [email protected] to book your assessment.

Pink Shirt Day

This upcoming Wednesday, February 28, is Pink Shirt day. It is a day that is being recognized as a health promotion day in Canada for anti-bullying. The Pink Shirt day movement was founded in 2007 by David Shepherd and Travis Price (17 at the time) who stood up for a Grade 9 boy who wore a pink shirt to school. Price and Shepherd distributed pink shirts among other male students and stood in solidity against bullying.

This year, the movement is focusing on cyber bullying, which is the act of bullying with electronics (ie. text messages, social media) which affects thousands of children and teens through out North America and around the world. With the growing improvement of fast instant messaging and social media, cyber bullying happens so often. There are many forms of cyber bullying and some include: exclusion, harassment, cyberstalking, catfishing and many more. For more information about the different ways of cyber bullying, please visit: Forms of Cyber Bullying

If you speculate that your child is being  cyber bullied here are some tips that can aid in stopping and preventing it from happening: Getting Cyber Safe

We as health care providers not only believe in having a healthy smile, but also that everyone has a right to live in peace and be free from any pain or stress. This Wednesday please wear Pink and stand up against bullying.

January 21-28 is National Non-Smoking Week. If your New Year's resolution involved butting out for good, you can find helpful advice/tips at:

In addition to your lungs and heart, tobacco use is also detrimental to your smile.

  • Smoking increases the risk of oral cancer, which can progress rapidly and be deadly if not diagnosed and treated early.
  • Smoking also increases the risk and severity of gum disease, one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss.
  • Smoking tends to delay healing after oral surgery.
  • Smoking can damage gum tissue, causing receding gums. Exposed root surfaces can be unsightly and temperature sensitive.
  • Smoking can cause bad breath and affect the senses of taste and smell
  • Smoking causes increased staining of the teeth.

Your dental provider can also educate you by demonstrating an oral cancer screening that could be performed by yourself at home. This will aid in detection of the disease, and with earlier detection the better the prognosis for treatment.

Happy New Year 2020

While making New Year’s Resolutions don’t forget to make sure your Oral Health is part of that list. With the Renewal of Your dental coverage make sure those 2019 treatments get completed so that you can smile a better you for 2020.

Wishing you and your family a happy new year and good health!

Holiday Season is just around the corner!

Where did the time go?

The holiday season is almost here!

With the year quickly coming to a close, it's easy to lose track of time and find yourself scrambling at the last minute to make plans with friends and family and buy gifts for the holidays. To help you avoid making the same mistakes as last year, follow these tips for a stress-free holiday season.

Plan your holiday shopping early:

Whether the gifts are big or small and the holiday dinner ham or turkey, it's never too early to plan ahead. Outline a budget and make note of everything you will need to purchase early to avoid that last minute holiday rush and dinner disaster.

Make a list and check it twice:

Write down the names of all the people you need to remember this holiday season. Whether they're receiving a gift, a card, or a dinner invitation, you don't want to forget anyone during the holidays.

Have a plan B:

While November was unseasonably warm, don't assume that this will be a continued trend in December. Be prepared for snow storms and whatever else Mother Nature might have in store for us. With road closures and flight cancellations being common during this time of year, it's always smart to budget extra travel time and make alternate travel plans.

Be mindful of your oral health:

It is okay to indulge in all the holiday treats and feasts, but don't forget about your teeth! Although travelling can disrupt your regular brushing and flossing routine, we want you to welcome the New Year with a healthy smile!

And don't forget, your dental benefits may reset at the end of the year, so be sure to give our office a call to book your final appointment before the new year.
